PESI: Extending Mobile Music Instruments with Social Interaction
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper presents the research project The Notion of Participative and Enacting Sonic Interaction (PESI). PESI aims to extend the engagement of performers in collective music practices using embodied approaches in physical and social interaction. In its design, the mobile phone functions as a tangible and expressive musical instrument, together with an extended system. In this paper, we contextualize the project with associated themes – physical, spatial and social interaction – and with related works. We also present the modular structure of the project, evaluation methods, initial conclusions and paths for future developments.

Composing Social Interactions for an Interactive-Spatial Performance System
This paper describes a recent composition, No More Together, in which performers’ interactions directly influence the sound of the piece. The composition provides a structure for group interactions, and is performed with the onbody and in-space components of ’PESI’, an interactive spatial performance system. Our composition attempts to compose social interactions, drawing upon notions of partic...
متن کاملPESI Extended System: In Space, On Body, with 3 Musicians
This paper introduces a novel collaborative environment in which performers are not only free to move and interact with each other but where their social interactions contribute to the sonic outcome. The PESI system is designed for co-located collaboration and provides embodied and spatial opportunities for musical exploration. To evaluate the system with skilled musicians, a user-test jam sess...
متن کاملEmbodied music listening and making in context-aware mobile applications: the EU-ICT SAME Project
Music making and listening are a clear example of a human activity that is above all interactive and social, two big challenges for novel HCI paradigms. Nowadays, however, listening to music is usually still a passive, non-interactive experience. Quoting John Sloboda " In highly industrialized societies, we listen to more music, but we make less " [1]. Even modern devices do not allow for inter...
متن کاملSmule = Sonic Media: An Intersection of the Mobile, Musical, and Social
We explore the potential for and implications of musical (or proto-musical) social interaction and collaboration using currently available technologies embedded into mobile phones. The dynamics of this particular brand of social intercourse and the emergence of an associated aesthetic is described. The clichéd concept of a global village is made a vibrant reality by introducing instruments with...
متن کاملThe Design Space of Sensing-Based Interaction for Mobile Music Performance
Active music performance can mean composition and interpretation of composed music or improvisation. In this paper we discuss the design requirements to make mobile handheld devices into actively engaged expressive musical instruments for these different types of performance. Candidate sensors are discussed and compared within this design space.
